Joint Fire Sciences, Best Scientist Manager Partnership 2004

In 2004, biologists from the Klamath Bird Observatory and the USFS Redwood Sciences Laboratory continued research that uses birds as ecological indicators of forest conditions in order to understand how wildfire and fire management influence ecosystem function. The Joint Fire Sciences Program (JFS), a national program that encourages partnerships between agencies, non-governmental organizations, and academic institutions, funds this exciting project. Each year, JFS researchers meet to present the results of their research. At this year's meeting, KBO's project was awarded the "Best Scientist-Manager Partnership". Results from our research were also presented at the 2004 Ecological Society of America meetings in Portland, Oregon, attended by more than 3,000 ecologists from the United States and abroad.

Taking Wing: Migratory Bird Conservation Award, 2003

The Klamath Bird Observatory, in partnership with the Redwood Sciences Lab, received the Taking Wing award for increasing understanding of wetland ecosystems and habitat relationships through excellence in science and management applications. This award is the first Taking Wing Award granted for a landbird research program. This represents the furthering of All-Bird Conservation where waterfowl, landbird, shorebird, wading bird, and seabird conservation issues are united under the North American Bird Conservation Initiative.

Taking Wing, led by the USDA Forest Service, is a partnership program with over 14 years of experiences and accomplishment in building, maintaining, and enhancing partnerships dedicated to the needs of waterfowl and wetland-dependent wildlife. In response to national direction, Taking Wing is expanding to include the larger scale and international goals of the North American Bird Conservation Initiative, Continental Bird Conservation Plans, and Joint Ventures.

Partners In Flight National Leadership Award
The Partners in Flight awards program recognizes exceptional contributions to the field of landbird conservation. Nominees who have furthered the goal of protecting migratory and resident landbirds and their habitats will be evaluated for their effective public awareness activities, innovative leadership, insightful ecological investigation, or sound land stewardship. Partners in Flight honored CJ Ralph, KBO's Research Director, with this award for his leadership in bird monitoring research efforts in the Klamath-Siskiyou Bioregion.
