Effects of timber harvest practices on birds in Southern Oregon

Study Objectives:
The goal of this study is to assess the effect that Wildlife Protection Areas have on resident and Neotropical migratory songbirds.

Project Description:
Southern Oregon Boise Corporation currently retains trees within timber harvest units as clumps or islands, rather than scattered individually throughout the unit. These islands of trees are referred to as Wildlife Protection Areas (WPAs). Two years of surveys were completed to determine the effects of WPA's. The results compare species richness, abundance and nesting success within harvest units containing WPAs and mature forest controls. With the results we intend to facilitate the development of local management guidelines to promote timber harvest prescriptions that provide sufficient habitat to sustain breeding populations of songbirds.

Methods:
off road variable radius point counts
nest searching
spot mapping
