Songbirds, Science, and Schools

Songbirds, Science, and Schools links education to the Klamath Bird Observatory’s most central science program—bird banding —and serves as a national model for best practices in education related to bird banding.  One of the cornerstones of KBO’s youth education programs, Songbirds, Science, and Schools includes multiple engaging science education components with an emphasis on field biology.  Songbirds, Science and Schools is a comprehensive learning experience that brings science inquiry to life for Jackson County students.  This three part program includes:

•    A classroom visit
•    A field trip to one of KBO’s bird banding stations in southern Oregon at the Willow Wind Community Learning Center in Ashland or the Jefferson Nature Center in Medford
•    A teacher packet with additional activities and resources.

Songbirds, Science, and Schools is aligned with Oregon state science standards and designed to help teachers provide engaging place-based science education to K- 8th grade students.  KBO’s programs are available on a first come, first served basis.  Sign ups for fall visits begin in late August and for spring visits in early March.  We request a donation of $3 per student for the program  (If this is not possible, limited scholarships are available upon request).  As part of your participation, we request that all teachers complete a 15 minute survey within two weeks of the field trip.  Teacher surveys help to ensure that Songbirds, Science, and Schools meets teacher and student needs, and allow us to continue to receive grant funding to offer the program at a low cost to local schools.  If you are interested in having your class participate in Songbirds, Science, and Schools, contact KBO's Education Team by clicking here.
