Protecting Wetlands, Water, and Waterbirds
Protecting Wetlands, Water, and Waterbirds is a program developed for 3rd-5th graders at Chiloquin Elementary through funding from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation Nature of Learning grant program. Project partners include Klamath Basin Audubon Society, OSU Klamath Basin Research and Extension Center, and USFWS Klamath Basin National Wildlife Refuge Complex.
Students learn about science, birds, and wetland habitats through classroom programs, field trips, service learning, and citizen science. Students monitor water quality, explore the national wildlife refuge and backyard habitats, and contribute to real science monitoring of these birds by collecting data for the Oregon Coordinated Aquatic Bird Monitoring Program. Protecting Wetlands, Water, and Waterbirds demonstrates that students can learn science concepts while benefiting wildlife and habitat conservation.
