The Avian Knowledge Network, or the AKN, is an international organization that seeks to better understand bird populations through the collection of bird observations from citizen scientists and agencies across the Western Hemisphere. The ultimate goal of the AKN is to educate land managers as well as the public about bird population dynamics, and does this by providing visualization tools that let the user explore and analyze the observational data collected based on area, species, or other variables. For example, if you are interested in bird migration you can look at the distribution of one species, or groups of species, over time. The AKN also brings different types of bird observation data together by archiving it into a common format, and much of the data can be downloaded and accessed from their website. KBO is one of the active partners for the AKN, and we not only contribute data to this network but use the visualization tools to better understand the dynamics of bird populations.
