Klamath Bird Observatory produces Decision Support Tools (DSTs) that deliver science-based information to communities who have opportunities to benefit birds and their habitats.  A DST is an instrument used for conveying scientific information that informs decision-making through synthesis and interpretation of quantifiable and repeatable scientific data.  For more information about DSTs and bird conservation see the manuscript Decision Support Tools: Bridging the Gap Between Science and Management.

Klamath Bird Observatory Decision Support Tools:

Riparian Fuel Treatments in Intermittent & Perennial Streams: Effectiveness and ecological effects - Extensive fuel treatments implemented by land management agencies in the Klamath-Siskiyou Bioregion have maintained no-cut buffer strips along riparian areas.  This DST addresses an information gap regarding decisions to include riparian areas in fuel reduction efforts.

Birds in Oak Woodland and Chaparral: Managing fuels and habitats in the Klamath-Siskiyou Bioregion - Land managers are implementing fuel treatments to restore oak woodland habitats in Klamath-Siskiyou Bioregion.  Using results from bird monitoring efforts and oak woodland bird conservation objectives this DST informs related decisions regarding management tools (i.e., mechanical or manual treatment types), spatial scale (area size, patch size) and prescription details (% reduction, composition of shrubs and trees, snag retention).

Birds in Mixed-conifer Hardwood Forests: Mananging fire-adapted ecosystems in southwestern Oregon - This DST synthesizes KBO's research and monitoring results from mixed-conifer hardwood forests in southwestern Oregon and links these results to the Partners in Flight coniferous forest and other bird conservation plans.  The DST shows that managing for certain habitat attributes  through fuel reduction and other management activities will benefit not only PIF focal species, but many other species and elements of biodiversity in these forests.

State of the Birds: United States of America, 2009 - Klamath Bird Observatory worked with many partner organizations in support of the North American Bird Conservation Initiative's efforts to produce the first State of the Birds report for the United States.  This report calls attention to the collective efforts needed to protect nature’s resources for the benefit of people and wildlife.

State of the Birds: United States of America: 2010 - The 2010 State of the Birds report is the first comprehensive assessment of the effects of climate change on bird species. The report emphasizes the importance of conservation efforts to protect not only threatened and endangered birds, but common birds as well.  KBO worked in partnership with many organizations in support of efforts to produce the report as part of the U.S. Bird Conservation Initiative.
